On November 17, at 12 noon, the winter season will open at the city’s public ice rink on Pasta (Post) Island. The updated skating schedule until November 23 will offer skating both on weekdays and weekends.
Member of the Board of the Zemgale Olympic Centre, Armands Ozollapa, explains that preparations for the winter season at the rink began already in October – worn-out safety nets were replaced, and technical maintenance was carried out on the cooling system, ice resurfacer, and other equipment. “This week we plan to start pouring ice in order to prepare at least a four-centimeter thick layer of ice by November 17 – this will be enough to maintain a high-quality ice surface. The appropriate air temperature for pouring ice is 5–7 degrees, and the weather forecast promises us favorable weather conditions,” says A. Ozollapa.
Each skating session this season will last one hour, with ice resurfacing taking place between sessions. Visitors will also have the opportunity to skate with hockey sticks, for which separate time slots will be provided. However, Ozollapa notes that hockey enthusiasts are encouraged to take care of their safety and, if possible, provide themselves with appropriate protective equipment.
The fee for a public skating session is 4 euros, for skating with hockey sticks – 4.50 euros, and the rental of a hockey stick is 1.50 euros. Beginners can also rent a skating aid for 2 euros per session. Visitors can come with their own skates or rent them. Skate rental costs 2 euros. Holders of the “Goda ģimene” card (Honorary Family Card) can receive a 50% discount on skating sessions and skate rental. This season, a discount has also been introduced for seniors and people with special needs – upon presenting a senior or disability card, a 50% discount will apply to skating sessions and skate rental. At the rink, payments can be made in cash or by bank card.
The skating schedule until November 23 is available at www.zoc.lv, under the “Slidotava” section. Updated weekly schedules will also be posted there. For additional information, call 20367677.
This season, the rink will again host training sessions for hockey players, figure skaters, and short-track athletes. The rink may also be rented for other training sessions and private events. For rental inquiries, call 26356449.
