BMX Rider Ģirts Jonkus – A World Champion
Ģirts Jonkus, representing the Jelgava BMX club “Mītavas kumeļi”, has become a world champion in the cruiser category for riders aged 45–49 among a competition of 57 athletes.
As reported by BMX coach Uldis Balbeks, this is Ģirts’ first world champion title—previously, he had twice claimed 2nd place in the world championships. Furthermore, this has been an exceptionally successful season for Ģirts after starting to compete in a new age group: he holds the Latvian, European, and now World Champion titles.
The BMX World Championship is taking place in Australia. Latvia is represented by seven athletes, including two from Jelgava—Ģ. Jonkus and Melānija Čudare, a student of the Jelgava Children and Youth Sports School.
