On the 107th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, on November 18, Jelgava presented its highest honours – the “Goda zīme” (Badge of Honour) and the “Goda raksts” (Certificate of Honour). These awards are the city’s way of expressing sincere gratitude to people whose work and dedication inspire others to aim higher, achieve more, and contribute to the common good.
During this national celebration, Jelgava City Council Chairman Mārtiņš Daģis presented five Badges of Honour and five Certificates of Honour to individuals whose work has significantly contributed to both Jelgava and Latvia. Long-serving Jelgava municipal executive director Irēna Škutāne did not receive her Certificate of Honour in person.
Congratulating the recipients of the highest awards, Jelgava City Council Chairman Mārtiņš Daģis thanked everyone who has worked for the good of Jelgava with their work, and also wished that the work done by the honorees would encourage others to strive to do more in our city in the future.
Jelgava’s highest awards have been presented since 1998. To date, 169 Badges of Honour and 270 Certificates of Honour have been awarded. The honours are presented twice a year – during the City Festival and on the anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia.
