Mārtiņš Daģis elected as chairman of Jelgava State City Council

Today, July 1, the newly elected Jelgava State City Council held its first official meeting. In an open vote, the deputies elected Mārtiņš Daģis, a representative of the political movement “Par!” as the Chairman of the Jelgava State City Council.

The first session of the Jelgava State City Council meeting until the election of the Chairman was chaired by Jelgava Election Commission Chairman Jānis Dēvics, who invited the deputies to nominate candidates for the position of mayor.

Deputy Uldis Dūmiņš nominated sworn attorney Mārtiņš Daģis, while deputy Maksims Galkins nominated Andrejs Pagors.

Following an open vote, Mārtiņš Daģis was elected Chairman with 11 votes in favor. Andrejs Pagors received support from 3 deputies.

In his first remarks as Chairman, Mārtiņš Daģis stated:

“We see this as a strong vote of confidence, and there is much work ahead. Our goal is to involve all elected deputies in the council’s work because the people of Jelgava elected us as their representatives, so we will try to work together as much as possible. Thank you for your support!”

He also expressed gratitude to Andris Rāviņš, the long-serving former chairman, for his dedication and work for the city.

During the meeting, the council also elected Deputy Chairmen. Chairman Daģis nominated Aigars Rublis (“Jaunā Vienotība”) and Mārtiņš Štāls (Jaunā konservatīvā partija) for the roles.

Aigars Rublis was elected Deputy Chairman for Social Affairs, Healthcare, Culture, Education, and Sports with 9 votes in favor.

Mārtiņš Štāls was elected Deputy Chairman for Economic Development with 9 votes in favor.

The newly elected 15-member State City Council began its term with the following members:

  • From the “Par!” movement: Mārtiņš Daģis, Uldis Dūmiņš;
  • From “Jaunās Vienotība”: Aigars Rublis, Kaspars Vaivods;
  • From the National Alliance “Visu Latvijai!”–”Tēvzemei un Brīvībai/LNNK”: Vilnis Švāns, Roberts Šlegelmilhs;
  • From the “Jaunās konservatīvās partija”: Mārtiņš Štāls;
  • From the “Latvijas reģionu apvienība”: Gunārs Kurlovičs;
  • From the “Latvija pirmajā vietā”: Imants Konutis;
  • From the “Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība”: Andris Rāviņš, Rita Vectirāne, Mintauts Buškevics;
  • From “Suverēnās vara” and “Apvienība jaunlatvieši”: Andrejs Pagors, Maksims Galkins, Valentīna Kudrjavceva.
