05/01/2026

On Sunday, January 11, in Jelgava at the Zemgale Olympic Centre, the decisive pre-qualification match of the Latvian men’s national handball team for the 2028 European Championship will take place against Great Britain.

In the 2028 European Championship pre-qualification round, the Latvian national handball team has only two matches remaining—both against the Great Britain team. The first match will be played on January 7 in Nottingham, United Kingdom. The return match is scheduled for January 11 at the Zemgale Olympic Centre in Jelgava at 3:10 PM. According to the Latvian Handball Federation, this will be an especially important match for the Latvian national team—over the course of the two-match duel with Great Britain, it will be decided in Jelgava which team will continue the fight for a place in the main qualification tournament of the European Championship.

National team head coach Margots Valkovskis notes that work is being done on all elements of the game, with particular attention paid to game speed. Assessing the upcoming opponent, Valkovskis emphasizes that the Great Britain team should not be underestimated—it is a developing team capable of putting up serious resistance.

Tickets for the match cost 6 euros; for children and youth aged 12 to 18 the price is 3.50 euros. Admission is free for children under 12, pensioners, and people with disabilities. Tickets can only be purchased in advance HERE.
