The demo sculpture of the International Sculpture Park “Summer Signs 2022” is created by the world’s most titled Latvian ice and sand sculptor Kārlis Īle together with Maija Īle, depicting Michelangelo’s work “Pietà” in a new form in the sand.

“Michelangelo is one of the greatest artists of all time. The sculptor is able to see and discover the very complex relationship between beauty and horror, love and hate, joy and pain, life and death. The special strength of such brilliant works is in the fact that they stand still and do not lose their relevance even today, when many mothers mourn their dead sons, and many people hope that these sacrifices are carried for a greater and nobler purpose,” – artists explain why they have chosen the artwork.

The 16th International Sand Sculpture Park “Summer Signs 2022” will open on June 4 and 5 on the Pasts island. The theme of the works this year is “Masterpieces”, and the artists will once again expose the flowing material to reveal to the audience the masterpieces created by man, nature and the universe. This year, the jury has nominated 15 sculptors from ten countries for the sand sculpture competition – Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Canada, Mongolia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. The artists will create 15 competition sculptures and a demo sculpture.

It should be noted that the sculptors will start bringing their ideas to life on Pasta Island on May 30, but an entertainment program for visitors is also planned for the two days of the event. To prepare for the event, Pasts Island will be closed to visitors from 2 June for security reasons.

Entertainment program

The Sand Sculpture Park will be open from 10 am to 11 pm on June 4 and 5. There will be activities for children in the square between the open-air concert hall “Mītava” and the skating rink on both days – a foam party and bubble workshops. On Saturday evening, at 7 pm, the band “Riga Reggae” will perform to the delight of the visitors, and at 9 pm – Edavārdi, but on Sunday at 8 pm – Ivo Fomins. The atmosphere of both days’ event on the Pasta island will be enriched by DJ Mareks Ameriks, an enthusiast of vinyl records in Jelgava.
