As a result of cooperation between the city of Jelgava and the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Latvia, at the end of January the municipality received a donation of 20 000 euros from the UAE Red Crescent movement for purchase of bedclothes and other inventory for people in social risk groups in Jelgava. At the end of the first of two planned procurements, from March 24 in Jelgava bed linen, mattresses and other inventory will be provided to families in need and other persons in social risk groups.

“We are using this donation in parts – the first purchase of inventory for the total amount of 6389,50 euros was delivered to us by SIA “Slinteks” – 170 blanket covers and sheets, 340 pillowcases, 175 blankets, 195 pillows and 10 mattresses. In order to give support, we have identified persons in social risk groups our city and currently with this delivery we will supply 36 families with children, as well as 20 children in out-of-home care, 50 persons of retirement age and 24 persons in low-income households,” says Deputy Head of the Social Affairs Department Jelena Laškova. A second purchase of inventory will be announced soon, as well as 3000 euros from the received donation will be used for improvement of living conditions for one family in need.

The donation was received in a joint project between the Red Crescent Charity and the UAE Embassy. The UAE Red Crescent movement is a voluntary humanitarian aid organization in operation since 1983, supporting official bodies around the world every year. Support for Jelgava has been provided during its winter campaign for the residents of Latvia. Similar projects are being implemented throughout Latvia and around the world, involving various UAE organizations.

The support was provided directly to Jelgava, thanks to the personal involvement of the UAE Ambassador to Latvia H.E. Hanan Khalfan Obaid Ali Al Madhani and the sympathy shown towards our city. As the embassy explains, Jelgava is one of the cities the Ambassador visited during her introductory visit in January of 2018. The city of Jelgava pleasantly surprised the Ambassador, therefore cooperation has continued in 2021. It should be noted that the Ambassador also visited Jelgava in September of 2020 during a visit of all residing Ambassadors in Latvia. “We are really pleased that the embassy had the opportunity to carry out this project in cooperation with a Latvian company that will benefit the residents of Jelgava who need this help the most. We thank Jelgava municipality for cooperation in the implementation of this project and we are looking forward to cooperate in new joint projects,” emphasizes Sintija Lejniece, Political Adviser at the UAE Embassy.
