Jelgava Spīdola State Gymnasium has been officially accredited as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, gaining the right to implement the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) – one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized secondary education programmes in the world.

Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, Spīdola State Gymnasium will offer a globally recognized and highly regarded secondary education programme focused on an interdisciplinary approach, critical thinking, academic excellence, and international perspective.

“We are extremely happy and proud of the work accomplished on the path to becoming an IB school. This is an investment in our students, their future opportunities, and the overall development of education in our city,” emphasizes Vineta Šrama, Deputy Director of Jelgava Spīdola State Gymnasium and IB MYP/DP Coordinator.

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year academic secondary education programme that offers in-depth knowledge and an interdisciplinary approach. It develops critical thinking, research skills, and a global outlook, enabling students to apply to higher education institutions around the world — often without entrance exams. It promotes self-directed learning, social responsibility, and active citizenship, while ensuring a unified teaching and assessment standard, regardless of country.

Jelgava Spīdola State Gymnasium has received accreditation from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) — a prestigious international education institution operating in more than 130 countries with over 5,000 schools worldwide. In Latvia, the IB programme is implemented in only six schools.

Since 2021, Jelgava Spīdola State Gymnasium has been implementing the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), integrating it into the Latvian education system for grades 7 to 10, with a bilingual approach to the learning process. It is also the only accredited IB MYP school in the Zemgale region.
